Political Pressure and the TWU

During our current campaign to organize JetBlue Inflight Crewmembers, we have been swimming upstream through a flood of misinformation and untruths generated by JetBlue management and their team of union busters. Their most recent anti-union graphic distorted the Transport Workers Union of America's (TWU) history of political involvement and attempted to tarnish the support we have been receiving from politicians throughout the New York area.

On March 19, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo tweeted his support of the JetBlue Inflight Crewmembers and their unionization efforts with the TWU. That tweet, coupled with a corresponding article in Forbes magazine, leaves no doubt about Governor Cuomo's support for all of you. The governor's tweet was the first of many tweets from New York's political sphere supporting the TWU and IFCs. We received tweets from several influential New Yorkers as your ballots began arriving:

  • Carl Heastle, New York Assembly Speaker
  • Joseph Crowley, New York Representative
  • Thomas DiNapoli, New York State Comptroller
  • Corey Johnson, New York City Council Speaker
  • Tish James, New York City Public Advocate
  • Adriano Espaillat, United State Representative

In addition, we have also heard from powerful politicians like New York Senator and Senate Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer and Vermont Senator, Bernie Sanders.

Unfortunately, JetBlue management's union busters took this opportunity to falsely claim that donations made to Gov. Cuomo through TWU's Political Action Committee were paid from the dues paid by our members. This is completely untrue. TWU's Committee On Political Education (COPE) is funded entirely by voluntary donations from our members and our supporters. No dues are EVER used as political contributions to any candidate, and our Members are directly involved in the bi-partisan decisions of COPE's selection of pro-labor political candidates.

So what is JetBlue so afraid of? They certainly have no problem making political contributions of their own. You can visit opensecrets.org to see the donations JetBlue has made - often to decidedly anti-worker candidates - with no input from JetBlue employees.

JetBlue is afraid of the political clout the Transport Workers Union of America brings to the bargaining table. You have broad support in the New York area and throughout the country from politicians from all parties. After your "YES" vote, you will elect your Negotiating Team and move into contract negotiations. The leadership of TWU International has a strong group of advocates in the political arena. And those politicians are not afraid of speaking their minds when it comes to helping workers and their families. New York politicians have a long history of standing alongside the labor movement, and JetBlue is afraid of the political support TWU could bring into a contract battle.

Please look past the misinformation and look towards the facts. Thank you again for your support, and VOTE YES FOR TWU!

In unity,
Your TWU Organizing Team
